Mechanisms don't work when they embarrass people. Asking someone unexpectedly to do something in front of 400 people is almost always a bad idea.
Mechanisms also don't work when they're too complicated: if you have to explain it, it's too much. They don't work when they last too long. A mechanism takes a moment, half an hour, sometimes an hour. Not the whole day.
And finally: mechanisms have to fit the audience. What works for a young sales team doesn't work for a board meeting. Test the mechanism in your head with three different people from the organisation before you do anything with it.
