What exactly is a ship christening?

A ship christening is the official ritual in which a ship receives its name. A bottle of champagne is broken against the bow, the name is pronounced, and the ship is christened.

The godmother (or godfather) plays the central role. She officially christens the ship and symbolically takes on responsibility for the wellbeing of ship and crew.
