A team day is a day out together, informal, relaxed, focused on fun and connection. Team building has a more explicit goal: behavioural change, better collaboration or more trust within the team.
The difference lies in the intention and the structure. Team building always requires a clear goal up front and an activity format that serves that goal. Afterwards comes reflection that links the lessons to everyday work practice. Without those three steps it is a team day, and that is fine too, as long as you call it that.
