What is the difference between a save the date and an invitation?

A save the date is the earliest message: short, striking and intended only to claim the date. No programme, no sign-up link, just: save this date.

The invitation follows 2-3 weeks later with all the content: what, when, where, for whom, why and how to sign up. A reminder follows 1-2 weeks before the event for those who have not yet responded.
