A conference is typically formal and plenary: long presentations, a speaker on the stage and an audience that listens. A knowledge event is interactive and participatory: short impulses, parallel workshops, breakout sessions and peer-to-peer learning. At a conference you sit in a chair. At a knowledge event you stand up, move, make your choices and work together. The difference lies in the participation, and therefore in how much knowledge actually sticks.
