Send the save-the-date 6 to 10 weeks in advance, the formal invitation 4 to 6 weeks before the event and a reminder 1 to 2 weeks before the deadline.
For events in busy periods (September, November, December) allow more time. An invitation sent too early without reminders is worth as much as no invitation.
