Who christens a ship? Who is the godmother or godfather?

The godmother (or godfather) is the person who officially gives the ship its name by breaking the champagne bottle. The choice is free: the owner's wife, a loyal client, a local figure or a special staff member.

At larger shipping companies a well-known public figure or administrator is sometimes asked. The godmother usually receives a keepsake as a gift.
