What are the unwritten rules of business networking?

Start a conversation with your name, organisation and role: two sentences at most. Then ask an open question. Aim for a conversation of two to five minutes and then move on warmly. You hand over cards only after a conversation, not as an opening move. Don't interrupt an ongoing conversation between two people who are clearly deep in discussion. Don't look over someone's shoulder at the next guest. Put your phone away. And don't eat while you're starting a conversation at the buffet. Networking is about real connection, not about collecting business cards.
