Why original staff party ideas matter

The staff party is in the diary. Now the real work begins: what are you going to do? A standard drinks reception with bitterballen and a DJ is fine, but if you want something your team really remembers, you need to think further. That's where strong staff party ideas come in.

A staff party is more than a night out. It's a signal to your people: we invest in you. We take you seriously. And we want you to feel connected: to each other and to this company. That only works if the party truly does something: surprise, connect and offer an experience that goes beyond the everyday. It doesn't have to be expensive. It does have to be thought through.

Below you'll find fifteen ideas: from active to culinary, from small to large-scale, from classic to surprisingly original.

Sporty and active staff party ideas (1–4)

1. Escape room challenge. Teams of 4 to 6 people race through puzzles and tasks. It delivers tension, collaboration and always good stories afterwards. Available in almost every city, also as a private event with a bespoke theme.

2. Urban sports festival. Skating, climbing, graffiti, beatboxing: hire a sports hall or outdoor venue and build several activity stations. Works well for young, energetic teams or when you want to bridge the generation gap.

3. Cooking competition. MasterChef-style in a professional kitchen: teams cook dishes that are judged by a chef. Combine rivalry with collaboration and close with a shared dinner.

4. Sports day with your own Olympics. Self-designed sports, silly challenges, relay races: this programme is fully bespoke and works best outdoors, with a barbecue as the home base.

Creative and cultural ideas (5–8)

5. Improvisation workshop. A stand-up comedian or improv company trains your team in improv techniques. The result is laughter, nerve and insight into communication styles. The workshop ends with a short performance by the team. Especially suitable for teams working on collaboration and presentation skills.

6. Creative studio experience. Think pottery, painting, ceramics or jewellery design. Everyone goes home with something they made themselves. Quieter in tone, but enormously valuable for teams that normally have little room for creative thinking.

7. Mini-musical in one evening. With guidance from theatre makers, your team writes a mini-musical in two hours and performs it. Laughter is guaranteed. Works well for extroverted teams.

8. City game or city safari. Teams explore the city via an interactive app, solve tasks and visit special locations. This works excellently as a team-building format and as a lead-in to an evening in the city.

Culinary ideas (9–11)

9. Whisky, wine or beer tasting. An expert takes you through the world of distilling or winemaking. Combines knowledge with tasting and always sparks good conversations. Add bites that match the flavours for a complete evening.

10. Street food festival (private). Hire several street food stalls for one evening. Barbecue, ramen, tapas, Thai: everyone chooses. Informal, social and easily scalable from 30 to 300 people.

11. Dinner in the dark. Eating in complete darkness, served by staff used to the setting. Intriguing, a little nerve-wracking and a conversation starter for weeks afterwards. Available in larger cities.

Evening- and party-focused ideas (12–15)

12. Themed party with a full concept. Think eighties, casino royale, jungle or Las Vegas. A theme gives structure to décor, dress, music and activities. The more consistent the theme, the stronger the atmosphere.

13. Rooftop party at sunset. Pick a rooftop in the city, with a view, drinks and a strong playlist. This concept is simple, visually striking and perfect as a close to an intense work period. Book well in advance.

14. Silent disco. Everyone dances on headphones, with two or three DJs spinning at the same time. The format is visually comic, enormously fun and scalable from small spaces to large halls.

15. Live music concert with your own band. Book a live band that fits the taste of your team: from cover band to jazz, from funk to Dutch pop. Live music lifts every party to another level. Combine with a good dinner for a complete evening.

How do you pick the right idea for your team?

The best choice depends on the size of your team, the average age, the culture inside your company and the goal of the party. Do you want relaxation after an intense period? Choose something active or culinary. For team building, something where collaboration is essential works. Do you want to celebrate that you're here? Then choose the format that gives the most energy.

And: ask your team. A short poll or brainstorm often turns up surprising ideas, and creates engagement before the party even starts. More on organising a staff party →

What is the difference between a corporate event and a staff party?

A staff party is specifically for staff: internal, familiar, and the mood is looser. A corporate event is broader and can be a staff party, but also a conference, kick-off, anniversary or client event.

The difference lies in the approach: a staff party is about celebrating and connecting. A corporate event can also serve strategic goals, such as knowledge sharing, brand positioning or culture change.

What is the difference between a corporate event and a staff party?

A staff party is internally focused and revolves around appreciation and fun. A corporate event often addresses several audiences at once: staff, clients, partners and press. The message is broader, the story more strategic and the image more representative. The two can overlap, but the starting point differs.
